Introduction to Illustration & Creative Drawing

with Natty Peterkin

This is a relaxed, practical course and would be ideal if you have interest in drawing and creative practice in general. Prior drawing experience is not necessary but you should be willing to draw and to share your drawings with others. Early sessions will include a number of practical activities that will help you find your own individual illustrative style. Other activities will stimulate creativity and help you find your own unique sources of inspiration.

You should bring along an A4 sketchbook (larger if you prefer) and any drawing materials you think you might like to use.

Week 1 – Taking a leap into the unknown: tips on how to use simple methods to create effective images.

Week 2 – Word and Image: Exploring the link between the word and picture to create meaning.

Week 3 – Exploring the imagination: taking leaps into the unknown to discover new ideas.

Week 4 – Back to the drawing board: editing your picture and working it through stages of development.

Week 5 – Exploring narrative with imagery: Writing a cartoon strip.

Week 6 and 7 – Working towards a brief; using inspiration from secondary material.

Week 8 – Keeping on with drawing – How to keep yourself creating when you feel blocked.

About the tutor:

I graduated from the Communication Design MA at Norwich University of the Arts in 2015, following a BA in Illustration at the same institution. I currently work for the Museums Service and as a freelance illustrator. I am currently the in-house designer/illustrator for Gatehouse Press. I have illustrated book covers, the entirety of a poetry book (Shed by Martin Figura), album covers, festival and gig posters, band merchandise, a series of abstract paintings for Takeaway Art’s subscription service and have had several solo exhibitions of my larger paintings. I make artist’s books and ‘zines and have a keen interest in philosophy and bringing together different forms of creativity; I also singsin two touring bands, which brings musical influence into my artwork and vice versa.
