Dressmaking for Improvers
10 weeks: 15th September -20th October, 10th November- 1st December 2026
This course is designed to follow on from the Introduction to Sewing Machine course or for people who have some experience of using a sewing machine who wish to improve their garment making skills.
The course will work on two simple garments, of the course participants choice, the first in a woven fabric and the second in a jersey fabric.
Most sessions will start with a demonstration of a garment construction technique or other skill or relevant information focused session. This will be followed by time and support to make the course participant’s chosen garments.
Students are encouraged to learn from the methods used in what other course participants are making.
Please bring a pattern to make a simple garment suitable for a woven fabric to the first session with enough fabric to make it.
Participants need to bring their own sewing machine and equipment with them.
If students can do some work on their garments at home there is more opportunity to learn new skills.
About the tutor
Helen Goddard
I am a garment maker with many years of experience, a sewer and designer for theatre for the last ten years, a constructor of all things made from textile as well as enjoying making textile art. I have been teaching people to sew for over 40 years, have teaching qualifications and qualifications in many elements of textile surface design. I really enjoy teaching people to sew, and develop their creative skills. Clothing design and construction techniques are a particular interest to me as are the qualities of textiles and the use of the sewing machine.
