Introduction to Illustration & Creative Drawing

with Natty Peterkin

This is a relaxed, practical course and would be ideal if you have interest in drawing and creative practice in general. Prior drawing experience is not necessary but you should be willing to draw and to share your drawings with others. Early sessions will include a number of practical activities that will help you find your own individual illustrative style. Other activities will stimulate creativity and help you find your own unique sources of inspiration.

You should bring along an A4 sketchbook (larger if you prefer) and any drawing materials you think you might like to use.

Week 1 – introduction: an exploration of what illustration can be through examples, discussion and creative exercises to encourage playful thinking.

Week 2 – Pictures and words: how images can be combined with (or made of) the written word to convey meaning through using techniques such as collage and drawing.

Week 3 – Thinking sideways: unexpected drawing and mark making exercises to stretch the imagination and help us see things differently.

Week 4 – Developing an idea; using visual research, sketchbook work, drafting and constructive feedback to refine your idea.

Week 5 – Visual storytelling; creating a narrative through imagery.

Week 6 – Collaboration: making artwork together in spontaneous and playful group exercises.

Week 7 – Working to a briefs and deadlines – finding liberation in restrictions and turning problems into advantages.

Week 8 – Ideas: “filling the well” of creative inspiration through fun idea-generating exercises. Throughout the course classes will include group discussions and time to look at art books and resources brought in by the tutor

About the tutor:

Natty Peterkin graduated from the Communication Design MA at Norwich University of the Arts in 2015, following a BA in Illustration at the same institution. He works for the Museums Service and as a freelance illustrator. He is currently the in-house designer/illustrator for Gatehouse Press. He has illustrated book covers, the entirety of a poetry book (Shed by Martin Figura), album covers, festival and gig posters, band merchandise, a series of abstract paintings for Takeaway Art’s subscription service and has had several solo exhibitions of his larger paintings. He makes artist’s books and ‘zines and has a keen interest in philosophy and bringing together different forms of creativity; he is also the sings in two touring bands, which brings musical influence into his artwork and vice versa.
