Dressmaking for Beginners
 
Sewing your own clothes is a thoroughly rewarding, enjoyable and addictive hobby. On this eight week course, you will learn how to get the best out of your sewing machine and learn dressmaking skills and techniques in a fun and friendly atmosphere.
During the course, you will learn how to:
* Understand and read a pattern.
* Take measurements to get the best fit.
* Adapt a pattern so that it fits.
* Choose the right fabric for different projects.
* Prepare cloth, cut a pattern and make dressmaking marks.
* Make sample seams, zips, hems, buttonholes, darts and pleats.
* Add inseam pockets to a garment.
You will also get to make at least one item with full support and guidance during the course.
For the dressmaking course you will need to bring:
* a sewing machine
* thread
* tape measure
* fabric and paper scissors
* pins or pattern weights
* tailors chalk or dressmaking pens
* practice zips and buttons when we cover this aspect of the course.
For your sewn project you will also need fabric, a pattern and notions as appropriate, these won’t be required at the start of the course.
About the tutor
Lisa Smith-Clare is a self-taught dressmaker, with over thirty years experience. She studied Textile design initially before an English degree and then a career in Further Education teaching. Sewing is Lisa’s passion, she has always been a highly creative person and wears the vintage inspired clothes she has made everyday. She has a creative business Bobo Bun, where she sells vintage inspired accessories and takes on clothing commissions. Through her blog and instagram page the opportunity to make garments and review them for fabric companies came about. Lisa also teaches dressmaking at The Makeplace in Norwich.
